Kiwi Tiny Homes great demand with LockdownTiny home builders around the country are fielding large numbers of calls during the lockdown from people inquiring about tiny houses, and it seems many are wanting additional accommodation for family members on a long-term basis.
“Our plan during the lockdown was just to carry on with the brand – to keep marketing, but we have been flat out answering calls. People’s economic circumstances are changing and that seems to be prompting the inquiries.
We have heard from people cancelling big new build projects because they are worried about their jobs. They no longer want the half-million-dollar house. And we have had a lot of inquiries from families that are ‘herding’ – keeping everyone close and looking for a tiny home to put on the property, whether it’s for a mother or daughter to live in.
We have been bombarded from everywhere. People seem to be reassessing how they want to live. I think the virus has shown how vulnerable we are (to outside influences). The tiny house also appears to be the new investment option for mum-and-dad investors, who want to rent them out.

” For the first 10 days, the phones went very quiet. I think everyone was in shock, but since then we have had a lot of calls. People have had the time to think about what they really want to do. Some have been thinking about a tiny house for a while and now they have made the decision to go ahead and do it.
One lady said she was sitting in lockdown in her tiny rented flat underneath someone’s house and said ‘Is this what I really want to be doing with my life?’ It was a wake-up call for her and she has made the decision to order a tiny house.
The past week and over the Easter weekend they have increased again. And we have noticed a greater interest from people wanting to do DIY on their tiny homes, such as putting in the kitchen and bathroom themselves. They aren’t quite confident enough to go for a full DIY package, but still want to get their hands dirty.
We have been doing quite a bit of design work. We have a number of clients we’re designing a tiny house for, and a couple of these will be DIY builds. That is part of the business that has been able to tick over during the lockdown. DIYers are always building to live in the house themselves. They have either purchased land or will be putting the house on family land.”
